Theresa May has suffered the biggest defeat of any Government in modern British history. She now faces a vote of no confidence.

In the EU referendum, the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency, like the country at large, split almost down the middle with a slight majority voting to leave.

Over the past few weeks I’ve received hundreds of emails from people who voted for Remain and Leave but were united in opposition to Theresa May’s deal.

It was for this reason that I rejected the Prime Minister’s botched and damaging deal.

We need to ensure that we protect jobs, workplace rights and environmental standards. We need an agreement on frictionless trade so that our manufacturing and food processing businesses can continue to export and we need certainty over our future relationship with the EU. “There are no more words to describe the frustration, impatience, and growing anger amongst business after two and a half years on a high-stakes political rollercoaster ride that shows no sign of stopping,” said Adam Marshall, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce. He’s right. And that’s why I believe we need a general election. We need a new, fresh approach. And we need to transform this country. There is much to be done. Poverty is growing, Universal Credit is letting down hard working families, homelessness is up, rough sleeping has doubled, personal debt is rising and crime is up too. Whilst the Conservative Party have been arguing amongst themselves there’s been an ever growing need for food banks. Head teachers report that children are searching through bins for food. Low paid jobs and zero hour contracts are causing misery.

We need a General Election to break the parliamentary deadlock and we need a Labour government to put the needs of the many before the self-interest of the few.
